Martin Luther letter critical of Jews is up for auction

A museum employee presents an original Lucas Cranach the Elder painting of Martin Luther (1525/1526) in front of counterfeits during the press preview of the exhibition "Really Fake. Cranach and His Copyists — Aspects of the Reception History" at the residence and workplace of Lucas Cranach in Wittenberg, Germany, on May 31, 2018. BOSTON (AP) — A letter written nearly 500 years ago by Martin Luther in which he refers to Jews as “devils incarnate” during a tirade against a former ally is up for auction, but Luther scholars warn that the man responsible for the Reformation should not be called anti-Semitic.

The single-page letter, with writing on both sides, is expected to sell for at least $300,000 at the auction being conducted by Boston-based RR Auction that concludes Wednesday (July 11).

“Martin Luther items don’t come to auction often, and this is in incredibly great shape for a 500-year-old letter,” said Robert Livingston, RR’s executive vice president.

The letter was written around September 1543 to a top official at Berlin’s St. Nicholas Church in response to a letter from the official requesting Luther’s interpretation of some biblical verses by which former Luther friend Johann Agricola justified his positive treatment of Jews in what is now Germany.

In his reply, Luther tells Georg Buchholzer that he has done well to preach against the Jews and should continue to do so, ignoring Agricola, whom Luther accused of being a habitual liar.

“For these Jews are not Jews, but devils incarnate who curse our Lord,” Luther wrote, according to RR Auction’s translation.

Luther, whose Ninety-Five Theses in 1517 triggered the Protestant Reformation and seismic rift in Christianity that still exists, sympathized with Jews early on because of the poor way they were treated by the Catholic Church, said Eric Metaxas, author of the 2017 book “Martin Luther.”

There is no doubt that Luther had strong negative feelings about Jews later in life when he was “cranky and sick,” but Metaxas cautioned against comparing 16th-century anti-Semitism with 21st-century anti-Semitism.

“We don’t mean what Luther would have meant by it,” he said.

Luther became frustrated that Jews would not convert to his version of Christianity.

“Later in his life, after he had in a sense re-presented the Christian faith the way he thought it should be presented, he was depressed and discouraged by the fact that many Jews of that era did not in fact accept this free gift of grace through Jesus,” Metaxas said.

Europe had a long history of mistreating Jews, said Christopher Boyd Brown, an associate professor of church history at Boston University.

“Luther plays a part in this grim history,” Brown said via email. “Yet as appalling as Luther’s intolerance of his Jewish contemporaries was, Luther was not an anti-Semite. His criticism of Judaism was rooted in theological disagreement over the reading of shared Scriptures, not in racial animus.”

Luther denounced medieval Christian charges that Jews were responsible for the death of Jesus and was a strong voice for nonviolent religious tolerance, Brown said.

The letter, which includes a leather clamshell case, is likely to be sold to a museum or private collector who will know how to properly preserve it, Livingston said. Lost to history until 1914, when it was discovered in the private collection of a German baron, it is being sold by a German document collector.

  • Some people wonder how anti-Semitism survived the centuries. Christian leaders like Luther made sure it did !! Hebrews were treated fine…as long as they converted to the correct brand of Christianity. Two-thousand years ago, Jews didn’t accept the fraudulent Jesus character…which is why Paul had to turn to the gentiles. Then we get this crap…

“…he [Martin Luther] was depressed and discouraged by the fact that many Jews of that era did not in fact accept this free gift of grace through Jesus” …

As many have suggested…there is a straight line from Martin Luther to the Holocaust.

  • “For these Jews are not Jews, but devils incarnate who curse our Lord,” Luther wrote, according to RR Auction’s translation.

    Followed by:

“There is no doubt that Luther had strong negative feelings about Jews later in life when he was “cranky and sick,” but Metaxas cautioned against comparing 16th century anti-Semitism with 21st century anti-Semitism.

“Yet as appalling as Luther’s intolerance of his Jewish contemporaries was, Luther was not an anti-Semite. His criticism of Judaism was rooted in theological disagreement over the reading of shared Scriptures, not in racial animus.”

“…he [Martin Luther] was depressed and discouraged by the fact that many Jews of that era did not in fact accept this free gift of grace through Jesus”

It is a very special kind of blindness that allows people to simply ignore the obvious, as these apologists for antisemitism have done. From Luther’s “ON the Jews and Their Lies”:

“First, to set fire to their synagogues or schools … This is to be done in honor of our Lord and of Christendom, so that God might see that we are Christians …” “Second, I advise that their houses also be razed and destroyed.” “Third, I advise that all their prayer books and Talmudic writings, in which such idolatry, lies, cursing, and blasphemy are taught, be taken from them.” “Fourth, I advise that their rabbis be forbidden to teach henceforth on pain of loss of life and limb …” “Fifth, I advise that safe-conduct on the highways be abolished completely for the Jews. For they have no business in the countryside …”
“Sixth, I advise that usury be prohibited to them, and that all cash and treasure of silver and gold be taken from them …”
“Seventh, I recommend putting a flail, an ax, a hoe, a spade, a distaff, or a spindle into the hands of young, strong Jews and Jewesses and letting them earn their bread in the sweat of their brow … But if we are afraid that they might harm us or our wives, children, servants, cattle, etc., … then let us emulate the common sense of other nations such as France, Spain, Bohemia, etc., … then eject them forever from the country …”

Nope. nothing to see here. Even though Luther sounds exactly like a Nazi, this is a different kind of Nazi. How oculd anyone Nazi that this is not the same thing at all?

  • I am always disappointed when RNS reprints AP or Reuters without the even basics of fact checking. The apologism for Luther’s antisemitism — and that’s what it was — in this article is appalling. To say that one isn’t really antisemitic by saying “The Jews should burn in hell for not accepting Jesus” because one was “cranky” and it was a “mere theological” dispute was is myopic at best and encouraging violence at worst. Even very conservative Lutheran bodies like the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod have acknowledged Luther’s antisemitism. Sadly, the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (home of famous beard Michele Bachmann before she ran for president and it was realized WELS still held the Pope to be the antichrist) has gone along with Metaxas’s “well, it wasn’t really antisemitism because, you see, that was the 16th century so…”

  • Most Christians were antisemitic in Luther’s time. It’s silly to argue otherwise. Today, things are better. Not perfect, but better. People change. Religions evolve.

But antisemitism that manifests itself in persecution is always more political than religious, as is all violence that happens purportedly in the name of faith. That’s just one more reason why separation of church and state is a good thing.

  • So, you like France’s arrangements.

Here in the United States we do not have separation of church and state.

  • RNS is going through an extreme financial crunch.

Fact checking and moderating apparently are not currently in the budget.

  • “‘Jews are … devils incarnate …’, [Martin] Luther wrote … [but that’s] not … racial animus”?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

So if I call my fellow born-again Christian brother, “Eric Metaxas, author of the 2017 book ‘Martin Luther'”, and the rest of the BreakPoint radio community, “[You] devils incarnate” – I’m just being “cranky and sick”?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

No sir – evidences prove otherwise. My fellow born-again Christian brother, Martin Luther, was Racist4Christ.

  • There are so many apologists for Martin Luther. Get real – antisemitism has been part of Christianity for a long time. Admit it. Feels better, eh?

  • Gee, after Martin Luther and his love for the Jews things got so much better for them in Europe. “Yet as appalling as Luther’s intolerance of his Jewish contemporaries was, Luther was not an anti-Semite. His criticism of Judaism was rooted in theological disagreement over the reading of shared Scriptures, not in racial animus.” Right. Anti-Semites are universally biblical scholars and could make such distinctions as they burned down Jewish homes, created ghettos and murdered Jews for the crime of being, well, Jewish. This article is not worthy of publication by RNS. It has no basis in reality. In the phrase of the day, it’s fake news.

  • Thank you, Ben. I was going to write something similar, but you’ve done it so well already. I believe it matters little what was in Luther’s mind at the time he wrote those hateful things, but rather how his comments were “heard” and “perceived.” His rhetoric reminds me of what we hear today from Trump. It rouses people’s hidden biases and hatred and causes great harm. His anti-semitism stemmed much more from a “racial” (Jews are not a race.) bias than from a philosophical or theological difference. Damn, those devils just can’t see why I’m right about everything. When they come here, they don’t bring their best. Let’s build a wall. Keep them out.

  • I have noticed myself that is significant issue the world over is a person or group telling a group of people “ya know? You are just not good enough, and whatever we do to you is justified by the stories we tell ourselves about you.” I came across a website the other day which I unfortunately did not bookmark, but which gave an historical list of the crimes committed against Jews for being Jews since, I think, roughly 100 AD. The Jewish heresy which became Christianity has a long history of doing this to the losers of that dispute, starting in the gospel of John, continuing through the Book of Acts and following a direct line right down to the present day.

  • Of course it doesn’t, and it isn’t, except for the far right anti semites, who need to believe that race means something.

  • Yes, I love how the tone of the article goes from Luther saying,”For these Jews are not Jews, but devils incarnate who curse our Lord” — to the end of the article where Luther “…was a strong voice for nonviolent religious tolerance”.

They don’t call it apologetics for nothing…This article is all about dancing around ugly facts !!

  • The last 42 words there, need to be flushed along with the used Cottonelle.

(And be sure to let the bathroom fan run for a while afterwards. Good ventilation is vital to good health.)

  • The Jewish heresy– yes it was.

    Which became Christianity–yes it did.

And cottonelle has still not own her case in Washington.

but since you asked me for it, here ya go. Enjoy.
